Bowl lotus is a miniature lotus with small leaves and flowers, bred for bowls and basins on a sunny porch. It loves Malaysian heat, but growing from seed takes patience; some seedlings need more than one season to flower.

  1. Rub the flatter, dimpled end of the seed (not the pointed tip) on a file or rough cement until the pale inside just shows.
  2. Soak in a glass of clean water in a warm, bright spot, changing the water daily.
  3. When seedlings have 2–3 leaves and roots, press them gently into heavy clay or pond mud — not potting mix — in a watertight 30–40 cm bowl.
  4. Keep 5–10 cm of water above the mud, topping up as it evaporates.

Tip: add a few guppies or change the water weekly so the bowl does not breed mosquitoes.
