Lotus loves Malaysian heat and grows all year in a sunny container pond on a porch or in the yard. Growing it from seed is a slow but satisfying project.

  1. File a small spot through the hard seed coat until the pale layer shows.
  2. Soak in a glass of clean water, changing the water daily.
  3. When seedlings have 2–3 leaves and roots, press them gently into heavy mud in a watertight basin.
  4. Raise the water level slowly as new leaves grow.

Tip: add a few guppies or flush the water weekly so the container does not breed mosquitoes. Skinned white lotus seeds sold for cooking will not grow.
