Mint seed is tiny and slow, so growing from seed needs patience — but once you have a few plants, they fill a pot quickly. Suits gardeners happy to fuss over a seed tray for a few weeks.

  1. Sprinkle seeds on moist, fine seedling mix and press lightly; do not cover.
  2. Cover the tray with clear plastic and keep it in bright shade; mist, never flood.
  3. Pot up seedlings once they have 4 leaves; give each plant its own pot.
  4. Pinch tips often from about day 60 to keep plants bushy.

Tip: grow mint in a pot rather than the open ground — it spreads by runners. Plants from seed can vary a little in scent; keep and divide the ones you like best.
