A colourful twist on everyday kailan, easy enough for first-time growers in pots, polybags or beds. The purple-red colour is strongest on the stems in bright light.
- Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in trays or directly in the bed.
- Thin or transplant to 15–20 cm apart once seedlings have 3–4 leaves.
- Water morning and evening in dry weather and feed every 7–10 days.
- Harvest the main stem just before the flower buds open; side shoots follow for a second picking.
Tip: in hot, dry spells mulch the soil with dry leaves or straw so the stems stay tender instead of turning fibrous.
