Kailan is one of the most reliable cabbage-family crops for lowland Malaysia, because it is grown for its stems and leaves rather than a head. It suits sunny balconies, porches and terrace-house yards.

  1. Sow 2–3 seeds per spot, 0.5–1 cm deep, and thin to one plant.
  2. Space plants 15–20 cm apart (25–30 cm if you want side shoots).
  3. Keep the soil moist and feed every 7–10 days.
  4. Cut the main stem when flower buds appear but before they open.

Tip: feed again after the first cut — the plant will reward you with tender side shoots for another harvest or two.
