Sunflowers are one of the most rewarding flowers for hot, sunny Malaysian gardens, and a favourite for growing with children. Grow them in a sunny pot on the balcony or in a row along the yard fence.

  1. Sow 2–3 cm deep where they will grow; they dislike being moved.
  2. Cover the seedbed with netting until seedlings have 4 true leaves, to stop birds and squirrels digging them up.
  3. Thin to the strongest seedling, and stake tall types early.
  4. Water deeply in the morning and feed once when buds form.

Tip: sow a few seeds every 2–3 weeks for flowers over a longer season.
