Zinnia is a fast, colourful flower for sunny balconies, terrace-house yards and anyone who wants flowers to cut for the house. Butterflies love it too.

  1. Sow 2–3 seeds per spot, 0.5–1 cm deep, directly in the final pot or bed.
  2. Keep moist; seedlings usually appear within a week.
  3. Thin to one strong seedling per spot.
  4. Pinch the tip when plants have 3–4 pairs of leaves for more flowering stems.

Tip: water the soil in the morning, not the leaves, and give each plant space — this is the best defence against powdery mildew in humid weather.
