Balsam (keembung) is a familiar old-garden flower that is easy for beginners and children to grow. Its ripe seed pods pop open at a touch, which makes it fun to grow with kids.
- Sow the round seeds about 0.5 cm deep in a tray or directly in the final pot.
- Keep moist; seedlings usually appear in 5–10 days.
- Keep the strongest seedling per pot, or transplant tray seedlings at 2–3 pairs of true leaves.
- Water whenever the top of the mix dries and feed every 2 weeks.
Tip: check the undersides of leaves every few days in hot weather — spider mites are balsam's most common pest.
