Chinese cabbage (kubis cina, napa) is a rewarding project for home growers who want something beyond everyday greens. In lowland Malaysia it does best in a bright spot with afternoon shade and a roof overhead to keep off heavy rain.

  1. Sow in a seedling tray about 0.5 cm deep.
  2. Transplant at 3–4 true leaves into a large pot, one plant each.
  3. Water every morning, feed every 7–10 days and keep netting over the plants.
  4. Cut the whole plant once the head feels firm.

Tip: if the plants don't form a tight head in hot weather, harvest the loose leaves young — they are just as good in soup and stir-fries.
