Chestnut pumpkin suits gardeners with a sunny patch and space for a spreading vine, or a strong trellis. The compact fruits are easy to handle and store well.

Sow 2 seeds per hole, 2–3 cm deep, on a raised mound with plenty of compost; keep the stronger seedling.
Let the vine run on straw mulch, or tie it to a sturdy trellis and support heavier fruits with a sling.
If small fruits drop, hand-pollinate early in the morning by brushing a male flower onto a female flower.
Harvest about 35–45 days after the fruit sets, when the skin turns dull dark green and the stem becomes corky.

Tip: let picked pumpkins rest in a dry, shady spot for a week or two — the flesh becomes sweeter and more floury.
