Malabar spinach is a great choice for beginners in lowland Malaysia — it loves heat and humidity where many leafy greens struggle. It is a vine, so give it a fence or simple trellis.
- Soak the hard seeds overnight (or nick the coat lightly), then sow 2–3 seeds per spot, 1 cm deep.
- Be patient — seeds can take two to three weeks to sprout.
- Keep 1–2 seedlings per spot, about 30 cm apart, and guide them onto the trellis.
- Pick the tender tips and young leaves regularly once vines are 30–40 cm long.
Tip: regular picking keeps the plant bushy and leafy. Remove flower spikes if you want more leaves; let a few berries ripen if you want your own seeds.
