Butterhead lettuce suits gardeners who can offer a cooler, partly shaded spot. In lowland heat it needs a little extra care to stay sweet and not bolt.

  1. Sow in the cool evening: press seeds onto moist seedling mix, barely cover, and keep the tray in a shaded, airy place.
  2. Transplant at 3–4 leaves to pots or beds, 20–25 cm apart.
  3. Give morning sun and shade from about noon onwards; water lightly every day so the soil stays moist.
  4. Harvest when the loose head has formed, or pick outer leaves as needed.

Tip: lettuce seeds may not sprout when the soil is too hot. If nothing comes up, sow again in the evening and keep the tray in the coolest shaded spot you have.
