Purple-Red Lettuce Seeds

Frilly loose-leaf lettuce with purple-red tips — pick leaf by leaf for colourful home salads.

  • Morning sun; shade from hot afternoon sun in lowlands
  • Sow on the surface, cover with a dusting of soil (seed needs light)
  • Germination: 3–7 days; sow in the cool of the evening
  • First leaves: about 35–45 days after sowing

A colourful loose-leaf lettuce for beginners with a balcony, pots or a shady corner of the garden. It does not form a head, so you can keep picking the outer leaves for weeks.

  1. Sprinkle seeds on moist seedling mix and press in lightly — do not bury deeply.
  2. Keep the tray in bright shade and mist daily until seedlings appear.
  3. Transplant or thin to 20–25 cm apart when plants have 3–4 true leaves.
  4. Pick the outer leaves from about day 35, leaving the centre to keep growing.

Tip: lettuce bolts and turns bitter in lowland heat. Give it afternoon shade, water in the morning and sow a small batch every 2–3 weeks.
