Sengkuang suits gardeners with a sunny bed of deep, loose soil and the patience for a 4–5 month crop. The vine climbs, so set up a trellis or fence before sowing.
- Soak seeds overnight, then sow 2 seeds per hole, 2–3 cm deep, 20–30 cm apart, in a raised bed with loose, sandy soil.
- Keep the stronger seedling and guide the vines up the trellis.
- Pinch off flower buds as they appear so the plant puts its energy into the roots.
- Harvest when the roots are a good size, usually after 4–5 months.
Tip: only the root is eaten. The seeds, pods, leaves and stems are toxic, so do not eat them and keep seeds away from children and pets.
