Papaya suits gardeners with a sunny corner of ground and some patience. Plants grown from seed can be male, female or hermaphrodite, and you only find out when they flower.
- Sow 2–3 seeds per polybag, 1 cm deep, and keep warm and moist.
- Transplant at 15–20 cm tall into a raised, well-drained spot, keeping the root ball intact.
- Plant 2–3 seedlings together per spot, 2–2.5 m from the next group.
- When they flower (about 3–4 months), keep one fruiting plant per spot and remove the extras. Male plants have long hanging flower stalks and usually do not fruit.
Tip: papaya roots rot quickly in standing water — plant on a mound and never let rain pool around the trunk.
