Crown daisy (tong ho) is a cool-loving leafy green, so in lowland Malaysia it does best for gardeners who can give it some shade and steady water. The small-leaf type is tender and quick.
- Scatter or row-sow seeds on moist soil and cover with about 0.5 cm of fine soil.
- Keep evenly moist; place in morning sun with shade from the hot afternoon sun.
- Thin to about 5 cm apart, then 10–15 cm as plants grow — the thinnings are edible.
- Harvest whole young plants at 15–20 cm, or cut above the lowest leaves for a second picking.
Tip: in very hot spells it flowers early and the leaves turn tough, so sow small batches every 2–3 weeks and harvest young.
