Four o'clocks (Mirabilis jalapa) suit gardeners who want colour with little effort. Flowers open from late afternoon into the evening, and one plant can carry several colours.
- Soak seeds in water overnight, then sow 1–2 cm deep, 2 seeds per spot.
- Keep the soil moist but not soggy until seedlings appear.
- Keep the strongest seedling and give each plant 40–60 cm, or one plant per large pot.
- Water when the topsoil is dry; established plants are quite drought-tolerant.
Tip: plants drop seeds and come back by themselves, so pick up fallen seeds if you do not want them to spread. All parts, especially the seeds and roots, are toxic if eaten — keep away from children and pets.
