Four o'clock (Mirabilis jalapa) is a classic kampung-garden flower that loves Malaysian heat and copes with rain. Flowers open in the late afternoon in magenta, yellow, white, pink and striped mixes, often on the same plant. A good choice for beginners with a sunny yard, porch or large balcony pot.

  1. Soak the seeds for 8–12 hours.
  2. Sow 1–2 cm deep, two seeds per spot.
  3. Thin to one strong seedling per pot.
  4. Water when the top few centimetres are dry; feed lightly.

Safety: the seeds and roots are poisonous if eaten. Keep seeds away from children and pets, and do not grow it alongside vegetables.
