Melampodium covers itself in small butter-yellow daisies from about two months after sowing and keeps going for months in heat and humidity. It forms a neat, rounded mound about 30–50 cm tall and drops its old flowers by itself, so there is no deadheading. A great choice for beginners, sunny borders and fence-line planting.
- Sow about 0.3 cm deep in trays or straight into the bed.
- Keep moist; seedlings appear in about 5–10 days.
- Transplant or thin to 25–30 cm apart once they have 4 leaves.
- Water during dry spells and feed lightly once a month.
Tip: it self-seeds readily — leave a few seedlings where they pop up for free plants next round.
