Catnip is a mint-family herb that many (not all) cats find irresistible — offer a fresh leaf or tuck dried leaves into a toy. It is also traditionally used for a mild herbal tea. Catnip comes from cooler climates, so in lowland Malaysia it is a challenge; it grows far more easily in the highlands.
- Chill the seeds in the fridge for about a week, then soak them for a few hours.
- Surface sow on gritty seedling mix and cover very lightly.
- Transplant into a pot with extra perlite or sand once seedlings have 4 leaves.
- Pinch the tips and pick leaves once plants reach 15–20 cm.
Tip: keep the pot in bright shade, under a rain shelter if possible, and let the topsoil dry slightly between waterings — soggy roots cause most losses.
