Plantain herb (Plantago) is a hardy, low-growing plant that copes with heat, rain and partial shade — an easy herb for beginners with pots or a spare patch of ground. Its leaves are traditionally used for tea or cooked when young.
- Scatter the small seeds on moist soil and press them in; do not cover.
- Keep the surface moist until seedlings appear.
- Thin or transplant to 15–20 cm apart once plants have 4–5 leaves.
- Pick the outer leaves from about day 60, leaving the centre to keep growing.
Tip: cut off the flower spikes before they ripen — it keeps the leaves coming and stops the plant from seeding into your lawn and paving cracks.
