Roselle thrives in Malaysian heat and is easy for beginners with a sunny yard or a big pot. The fleshy red calyces around the seed pod are what you harvest, traditionally used for tea, cordial and jam.
- Sow 1–2 cm deep in polybags or directly in the ground.
- Transplant at about 15 cm tall into a large pot or bed, 60–90 cm apart.
- Pinch the tip once at about 40 cm to get a bushier plant with more flowers.
- Pick calyces about 10–20 days after the flowers open, while plump and crisp.
Tip: check stems and leaf undersides for mealybugs, especially in dry spells, and wipe or hose them off early.
