Asparagus is a long-term project for patient gardeners with a permanent sunny bed. Seedlings first grow fine, feathery ferns that build up an underground crown; spears are only harvested once the crown is strong.
- Soak seeds for 24 hours, then sow 1.5–2 cm deep in deep pots or seedling bags.
- After 3–4 months, plant into a raised, well-drained bed 30–45 cm apart.
- Let all ferns grow freely in the first year; mulch and feed with compost.
- From the 2nd–3rd year, cut spears 15–20 cm tall, always leaving some ferns standing to feed the crown.
Tip: waterlogging rots the crowns in our heavy rains — a raised bed with sandy, compost-rich soil makes the biggest difference.
