Watercress grows best in cool, clean, flowing water, so in the lowlands it is a little slower and works best in a shady spot. A rewarding project for patient gardeners who like soup greens.
- Fill a pot with fine soil and stand it in a tray of water so the soil stays soaked.
- Scatter the tiny seeds on the surface and keep them in bright shade.
- Thin to 10–15 cm apart once seedlings have a few leaves.
- Cut stems about 10 cm long; the plant branches and regrows.
Tip: change the tray water every 2–3 days — it keeps the water fresh and stops mosquitoes from breeding.
