Petunia is for growers who are happy to give a little extra care. In lowland Malaysia it does best under a roof edge or porch, in a hanging basket, during the drier months; it is much easier in the highlands.
- Sow the tiny seed on the surface of moist mix in a tray. Do not cover it.
- Cover the tray with a clear lid and keep it in bright, indirect light.
- Prick out seedlings into small pots when they have 2–3 true leaves.
- Plant in a well-drained basket with morning sun and feed weakly every week.
Tip: small-flowered multiflora and trailing types cope with rain better than large-flowered types.
