Tropical water lilies flower through most of the year in Malaysian heat. Growing them from seed takes patience: seedlings are tiny for the first months and germination can be uneven. Best for growers who enjoy a long project and have a sunny porch, yard or strong balcony.
- Fill a small pot with fine, wet garden soil and sprinkle the seeds on the surface.
- Stand the pot in a basin so 2–5 cm of still water covers it.
- Keep it warm and bright, and top up gently.
- Pot seedlings on when they have 3–4 small floating leaves, deepening the water step by step.
Tip: add small fish such as guppies once seedlings are potted, or flush the water weekly, to stop mosquitoes breeding.
