China aster gives full, colourful flowers in purple, pink, red and white, lovely in pots and in a vase. It is a cool-season annual, so in the lowlands it does best when sown for the slightly cooler, less rainy weeks and grown under a roof.
- Sow in a seedling tray and cover very lightly.
- Transplant at 3–4 true leaves into fresh, well-drained potting mix.
- Water at the base, only when the top 2 cm is dry.
- Cut stems in the morning when flowers are half to three-quarters open.
Tip: never reuse soil where asters wilted before. Fresh mix is the best protection against aster wilt.
