Portulaca, known locally as bunga ros jepun, thrives on the heat, sun and dry soil that most plants struggle with. Ideal for west-facing balconies, wall tops, hanging baskets and hot porch steps.
- Fill a shallow pot with gritty mix and water it well.
- Mix the dust-fine seed with dry sand and sprinkle it on the surface.
- Press lightly and mist; do not cover with soil.
- Once seedlings are growing, let the mix dry between waterings.
Tip: overwatering is the main killer. In the rainy season, move pots under a roof and never leave them standing in water.
