Dahlias are a cool-climate flower, but compact bedding types grown from seed can give a cheerful show in lowland Malaysian pots if you keep them out of heavy rain. Best for balcony and porch growers who are happy to treat them as a short-lived annual.
- Sow in a seedling tray, about 0.5 cm deep, in a bright sheltered spot.
- Pot up into 20–25 cm pots with a fast-draining mix when seedlings have 2–3 pairs of leaves.
- Pinch the tip once for a bushier plant.
- Water only when the top of the mix is dry, and move pots under a roof in the rainy season.
Tip: cut off faded flowers just above a pair of leaves to keep new buds coming.
