Watermelon loves Malaysian heat and is a rewarding project for terrace-house yards and large, sunny rooftops.
- Sow 2–3 cm deep and keep one strong seedling per spot.
- Let vines run over a thick mulch, or train small-fruited types up a strong trellis.
- Hand-pollinate female flowers in the morning, and keep 1–3 fruits per plant.
- Support trellised fruit in slings, and reduce watering in the last 7–10 days.
Tip: heavy rain on nearly ripe fruit causes cracking and bland flesh. Sow so that harvest falls in a drier spell, and keep watering even.
