Winged bean (kacang botol) is a true tropical crop that copes with Malaysian heat, humidity and rain, and keeps cropping for months on a sunny fence or balcony net.
- Soak the hard seeds overnight and sow 2 per spot about 2–3 cm deep, directly where they will grow.
- Keep the strongest seedling and guide it onto a trellis about 2 m tall.
- Go easy on nitrogen — compost at planting and a potassium-rich feed once flowering starts are enough.
- Pick pods at about 15–20 cm, while they are still flat and snap cleanly.
Tip: check the vine every two or three days, because pods turn tough quickly. The young leaves, shoot tips and flowers are edible too.
