Bottle gourd (labu air) is a classic for Malaysian home gardens with an overhead para or car-porch frame. One healthy vine gives plenty of tender young gourds for soups and stir-fries.
- Soak the hard seeds for about 24 hours and sow 2 per spot 2–3 cm deep.
- Build a strong support before the vine starts to run.
- Pinch the main vine tip at the top of the trellis — most female flowers form on the side shoots.
- Pick the gourds young, while the skin is still covered in fine soft hairs.
Tip: the white flowers open in the evening. If fruit are not setting, hand-pollinate at dusk, and bag young fruit against fruit flies.
