Loofah (petola) is one of the easiest gourds for hot, rainy lowland Malaysia. It grows fast and covers a fence or overhead para, and the young fruit are a favourite in soups and stir-fries.

  1. Soak the seeds for 12–24 hours and sow 2 per spot about 2 cm deep.
  2. Keep the strongest seedling and give it a sturdy trellis at least 2 m tall.
  3. Water deeply in dry weather and feed regularly once flowering starts.
  4. Pick the fruit young, while your fingernail still presses into the skin easily.

Tip: loofah turns fibrous within days, so check the vine every day or two. Leave one or two fruit to dry fully on the vine if you want a natural sponge.
