Chinese leaf celery (daun sup) is the thin-stemmed, strongly scented celery used in Malaysian soups and porridge. Unlike thick Western celery, it copes well with lowland heat and part shade, making it a good choice for balconies.

  1. Soak the seed for a few hours, then scatter it on the surface of moist mix.
  2. Press gently but do not cover — it needs light. Keep moist under a clear cover.
  3. Transplant at 3–4 true leaves, 15–20 cm apart.
  4. Cut outer stems from about 60–80 days and let the centre keep growing.

Tip: be patient — celery seed often takes two to three weeks to sprout.
