Chives are a long-term crop for patient growers: slow in the first two months, then productive for years. Kucai (Chinese garlic chives) copes especially well with lowland heat and rain.
- Sow pinches of 5–8 seeds about 0.5 cm deep, 15–20 cm apart, or in tray cells.
- Keep moist in bright shade until seedlings appear, then give morning sun.
- Grow each pinch on as a clump; do not thin to single plants.
- When leaves reach 15–20 cm, cut the clump 3–5 cm above the soil and feed again.
Tip: chive seed loses vigour quickly, so sow it soon after buying and keep leftovers sealed in a cool, dry place.
