Mustard greens (sawi pahit) are one of the easiest cabbage-family vegetables for Malaysian balconies and terrace-house yards. They grow quickly, cope with lowland heat when given a little afternoon shade, and can be picked leaf by leaf or cut whole.
- Sow about 0.5 cm deep in moist potting mix, or in a seedling tray.
- Thin or transplant to 15–20 cm apart.
- Keep the soil evenly moist and feed every 7–10 days.
- Harvest outer leaves from about 30 days, or the whole plant at 35–45 days.
Tip: cover seedlings with fine insect netting from the start — caterpillars and flea beetles love young mustard.
