Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia) brings cheerful golden-yellow daisies with dark brown centres. It is an easy heat lover for sunny beds, borders and large pots, standing about 40–80 cm tall. The long-lasting blooms are good for cutting and popular with bees and butterflies.
- Scatter the seeds on moist seedling mix and press them in — they need light to sprout, so do not bury them.
- Keep damp in bright shade; seedlings appear in 1–2 weeks.
- Transplant at 4–6 leaves, 30–40 cm apart, into full sun.
- Cut off faded flowers to keep new buds coming.
Tip: it handles heat and short dry spells well but hates wet feet — in the rainy season, use raised beds or pots with plenty of drainage.
