Cassia, also called sicklepod, is an easy pick for sunny yards, fence lines and large pots. It shrugs off heat, grows into a bushy plant about 60–120 cm tall, and carries small yellow flowers followed by long, slender pods. The seeds are traditionally roasted and brewed as a tea.
- Pour warm (not boiling) water over the seeds and leave them to soak overnight.
- Sow 1–2 cm deep in full sun, two seeds per spot.
- Keep the strongest seedling in each spot, with plants 30–40 cm apart.
- Pick the pods once they turn brown and dry, then shell and dry the seeds fully.
Tip: collect pods before they split — dropped seeds sprout readily and can turn weedy.
