Purslane is one of the easiest greens for hot, sunny spots — perfect for beginners, rooftops and shallow troughs. The fleshy stems and leaves have a mild, slightly sour taste.
- Mix the tiny seeds with dry sand and scatter on moist soil; press in but do not cover.
- Keep the surface just moist until seedlings appear.
- Thin to 15–20 cm apart; the thinnings are edible.
- From about day 30, cut stems 5–10 cm long and let the plant regrow.
Tip: go easy on watering — purslane is succulent and rots in soggy soil. Pinch off flowers if you do not want it to self-seed all over the garden.
