An ornamental perennial for patient flower lovers — it is not an edible crop. From seed it is slow: germination can take weeks, and plants usually flower in their second year. After that, clumps flower year after year with little care.
- Soak seeds in water for 24 hours, then sow 0.5 cm deep in a seedling tray.
- Keep moist and warm; do not throw the tray out — late seeds keep coming up for weeks.
- Move seedlings to their own pots at 3–4 leaves, then plant out 20–30 cm apart.
- Grow on in full sun; remove old fans and divide crowded clumps once established.
Tip: good drainage matters more than feeding — grow in a raised bed or a pot with gritty soil so the rhizomes do not rot in our heavy rains.
