Stevia is one of the trickier herbs to start from seed: germination is naturally low and uneven, and seedlings are delicate at first. Best for gardeners who enjoy a challenge — a few strong plants are plenty for home use.
- Pick out the darker, plump seeds and lay them on moist seedling mix; do not cover.
- Cover the tray with clear plastic and keep it bright and warm, out of direct sun.
- Pot up seedlings carefully once they have 4–6 leaves.
- Pinch tips regularly to make plants bushy, and pick leaves before the plant flowers.
Tip: stevia hates wet feet. Use a gritty, free-draining mix and let the surface dry slightly between waterings in the rainy season.
