Peanuts are easy and great for kids: after the small yellow flowers fade, the stalks bend down and push into the soil, where the pods form. They need loose soil and a sunny spot.
- Sow kernels 3–5 cm deep, 20–25 cm apart, in loose, sandy soil.
- Water when the top soil is dry; avoid waterlogging.
- When flowering starts (around week 4–6), loosen the surface and hill up soil around the base.
- Harvest when most leaves turn yellow; dig up a test plant first to check the pods are full.
Tip: birds and squirrels like to dig up fresh-sown kernels — cover the bed with netting until the seedlings are established.
