Bitter gourd (peria) thrives in Malaysia's heat and humidity, making it a rewarding crop for terrace-house yards and sunny balconies with room to climb.
- Soak the seeds for 12–24 hours, then sow 2 per spot about 1.5–2 cm deep.
- Keep the strongest seedling and set up a trellis, A-frame or overhead para straight away.
- Feed little and often once flowers appear, using a fertilizer with more potassium than nitrogen.
- Pick the fruit green and firm, before they turn yellow.
Tip: melon fruit flies are the main enemy. Wrap each young fruit in a paper or mesh bag as soon as it sets, and hand-pollinate in the morning if baby gourds keep shrivelling.
