Cherry tomatoes are the most reliable tomatoes for lowland Malaysia. Large slicing types often struggle with constant heat and humidity, while cherry types set fruit more readily.

  1. Sow in a seedling tray, about 0.5 cm deep, and keep moist.
  2. Transplant into a large pot or polybag when seedlings have 4–6 true leaves, setting the stem a little deeper than before.
  3. Put in a stake or cage at planting time.
  4. Water deeply and regularly — uneven watering causes split fruit.
  5. Once flowering starts, feed according to the fertilizer label.

Tip: rain on the leaves spreads disease. A simple clear roof, or growing under the porch, makes a big difference during the monsoon months.
