Okra (bendi) is made for the tropics. Once it starts flowering, a few plants give a steady supply of pods for curries, sambal and stir-fries.
- Soak seeds overnight to soften the hard seed coat.
- Sow 2–3 seeds per spot, 2–3 cm deep, directly where they will grow.
- Thin to the strongest seedling, leaving about 30–40 cm between plants.
- Water regularly, and feed according to the fertilizer label once flowering begins.
- Harvest pods while young and tender, checking every day or two.
Tip: pods turn woody very quickly, so pick them small. Regular picking also keeps the plant flowering and producing.
