Spring onion is a must for Malaysian cooking and one of the easiest crops for a condo balcony or kitchen window ledge.
- Sow thinly about 0.5 cm deep in a tray or trough of light, well-drained mix.
- Keep moist and sheltered from heavy rain; seedlings look like fine green hairs.
- Transplant in clumps of 3–5 when pencil-lead thick, or thin direct-sown rows.
- Cut the leaves 3–5 cm above the soil and feed — they regrow in 2–3 weeks.
Tip: onion seed loses vigour quickly. Store opened packets airtight in a cool, dry place and sow them soon.
