Kangkung is the classic first crop for Malaysian balconies and terrace-house yards. It loves heat, rain and plenty of water, and it grows back after cutting, so one pot keeps giving.
- Soak the seeds in water overnight.
- Sow about 1 cm deep in moist potting mix, a few centimetres apart.
- Keep the soil wet — kangkung does not like to dry out.
- When stems reach 20–30 cm, cut them about 5 cm above the soil; new shoots grow from the base.
Tip: sow a small pot every two to three weeks so you always have young, tender stems ready for the wok. Older, tougher stems are a sign it is time to start a fresh batch.
