Heading cabbage is a cool-weather crop, so in lowland Malaysia it is a project for growers who enjoy a challenge. With good timing, rich soil and protection from rain and caterpillars, you can harvest firm, if smaller, heads.
- Sow in a seedling tray about 0.5 cm deep, ideally between October and January.
- Transplant at 4–5 true leaves into a large pot, one plant each.
- Water every morning, feed regularly and keep netting over the plants.
- Cut the head as soon as it feels firm.
Tip: if a plant refuses to head in hot weather, harvest the young leaves — they are edible and good in soups.
